4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised, March 7, 2009

This review is from: PortaMate PM3900 D.I.Y. Miter Saw Stand with 6-inch Wheels (Tools & Home Improvement)
I am a trim carpenter by trade. I just bought one of these on sale at a home center for $40. I intended to take it to the cabin and leave it there and then only have to take my saw back and forth.

I did have to file burrs to get the T support assembled. Even with that assembly was easy.

I really wasn't expecting much, but figured it was better than working on the floor. I was pleasantly surprised. It is sturdier than I expected. I put my largest saw, a 10" sliding compound on it and it holds it well. I haven't cut anything longer than 8 feet long and it worked fine. There is a little movement, but nothing objectionable. I rolled the stand around in my garage with the saw on it and didn't feel like the saw was in danger of falling. It folds up small enough to fit in a compact car. It extends to over 9 feet but is much sturdier at 8 feet or less.

If you intend to mount a hitachi saw on it with a 3 hole mounting pattern you may consider bolting... Read more

This review is from: PortaMate PM3900 D.I.Y. Miter Saw Stand with 6-inch Wheels (Tools & Home Improvement)
The short version... it is study, takes time to fine tune if needed, could use a shim kit. Pleased with it, happy with my purchase.

The good, it is sturdy. I'm at a 190lbs and can sit on it and it doesn't feel like it is going to fold up like a cheap lawn chair, it is actually fairly solid feeling when loaded down.

The adjustments are very simple and basic, which means fine tuning it can take a little trial and error. As you secure the knobs for the height adjustment, the arm might shift causing a change, so it can take a few tries to get it set up just right. But once set, just a little care will make sure you don't whack it out of adjustment, easy enough and no problem.

For me, the biggest issue is not so much with the stand, but with my miter saw, a Ridgid brand. The base plate is sort of tapered, so the front mounting holes are further apart than the rear. Now the stand comes with adapters for this, but with my saw, the adapters are too... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars What I don't like...., March 30, 2009

This review is from: PortaMate PM3900 D.I.Y. Miter Saw Stand with 6-inch Wheels (Tools & Home Improvement)
I do like the wheels being at the bottom when the stand is open... wheels that go to the top are useless. I do like that the saw is so easy to mount or dismount. But I don't like that the risers that support your work are square tube that is considerably smaller than the pockets they fit into, which makes the riser lean badly when you tighten down the knob. The risers are so out of plumb that it causes wider boards to "twist", so that your work doesn't lay flat on your saw's cutting table. With smaller mouldings, such as quarter-round, the support "T"s are so out of level that the moulding flips over.I e-mailed the company through their "contact us" form, but they never replied.

Triton 8.5

Product Description

Doing the work of a 10 compound miter saw, this Triton 8.5 sliding compound miter saw is sure to be a shop favorite. Its sliding system extends the cutting capacity to easily cut crown molding or dimension materials for ease of handling before final sizing. The compact design, and alloy construction means less weight, lower blade costs and is great for us in confined work spaces. Blade Dimensions: 8.5 x 5/8 x 24 Tooth. Includes: laser, material clamp, 2 side support arms, 8.5 24 tooth TCT blade, blade wrench, dust bag.

3.0 out of 5 stars triton 8.5.sliding compound saw, June 3, 2011

This review is from: Triton 8.5" Sliding Compound Miter Saw (Misc.)
The saw is solid enough,, a larger foot print than I expected but good, makes it stable during use. First off get rid of the provided blades. They are out-of-round,wobble and leave a jagged cut.Get a good thin kerf blade, you will be happy you did. Laser is useless. Can not be adjusted and invisible in the outdoors. Poor positioning of the dust bag with no way to secure it to keep it from falling off. Clicking of degree adjustment a little sloppy, causing a visual to affirm proper setting. The saw cuts accurate enough, but with wider boards it groans at the end of the cut. The saw does have its limitations, but all in all it does the job as I am able to get smooth, straight cuts at all angles and at a good price.

2.0 out of 5 stars There does not appear to be ANY current support for this saw...., August 8, 2011
This review is from: Triton 8.5" Sliding Compound Miter Saw (Misc.)
I purchased this 8.5 inch sliding compound mitre saw from the local branch of a national woodworking chain a couple of months ago. Because of space limitations in my garage/workshop, and the 100 plus degree F temperatures we are currently experiencing, I have not yet set it up or used it. My comments pertain not to the quality of the device, but to the apparent lack of support for the device.

I was looking at the two Triton webs sites (the US site, "[...]", and the UK site, "[...]") for additional information on this saw and a electronic (PDF) version of the saw's manual. I did a search by model number (TS8SBSMS, and variations on this number) on both the US and the UK Triton sites and the "[...]" site (which Triton say is THE source for spares for their tools) with the result of finding NOT ONE INDICATION on these sites they ever produced this saw, certainly no spares. I couldn't even find the 8.5 inch (215 mm) saw blade used by this saw. Even though this is a closeout... Read more

This review is from: Craftsman 7-1/4 in. Miter Saw with Laser Trac (Misc.)
First, note that you can buy this saw at Sears for $69.99.

I bought it to do light trim in small jobs where I didn't want to carry around my 50lb Dewalt miter saw. At first, I thought it to be useless junk. After lots of adjusting and use on more carpenter-type jobs, I found its small size and light weight handy enough to live with its inadequacies.

Second, forget the compound bevel cuts--you will never get within a degree or two of your desired angle and the setting will only last for a cut or two. Further, When you rotate the blade for a compound cut, it does not stay at the desired miter angle. For example, tilting it 45 degrees at what you would hope to be a 30 degree miter angle will probably give you a miter angle between 28 and 32 degrees, even if you can get an accurate tilt angle, which is unlikely.

Third, plan on spending a lot of time adjusting the laser.

Fourth, throw away the blade it comes with and buy a Freud thin... Read more

I love this little guy for backyard DIY work. Yeah, it's imprecise, but it cuts well, it's super light, and it tucks away nicely. The laser also works well enough to handle most jobs. It's probably not for you if you're charging money for something that needs to look perfect, but for everyday frame/box/whatever making on 2x4 or smaller stock, it does the trick for cheap.

This review is from: Craftsman 7-1/4 in. Miter Saw with Laser Trac (Misc.)
This is a great little saw with features you wouldn't expect, like a built-in laser, and it comes with 2 blades - a rough cut and a finish. This saw is available brand new from either Sears or Kmart for about $80-$90. (as of 10/08/09 anyway)

As a professional handyman this works perfect since most precision miters are done on relatively small stock. This little guy, at only 11" tall when closed, fits right out the side window of my truck's topper!

Buy one today! Look around for the best deal ;)

    Plus, it's only 16lbs!
